Buddy Reading

The whole school has been involved in buddy reading for the last month. Each pupil reads with their partner for about twenty minutes. Third class are reading with Junior Infants, fourth class are reading with Senior Infants, fifth class are reading with first class and sixth class are reading with second class.

We have all had a great time, we have made good friends and best of all we love reading with our buddies.

Why don't you leave a comment about buddy reading on the school blog?

Fourth Class Have the Power

Fourth class definitely have the power. They composed this great song for Energy Saving Week. Click the picture on the right if you would like to hear our song. Fourth class also designed amazing clothes out of recycled material. Click the picture below to see all our designs.

Well done fourth class and to the Green School Committee for all their hard work.

Energy Awareness Month

March is energy awareness month!! Lessons are being taught in all classes on energy. Here are some fun facts on energy!

Did you know!
1. The Sun is the earth’s main source of energy!
2. It takes more energy to make something from scratch. By recycling and re-using you are actually saving energy!
3. There is more energy in a chocolate bar than in an apple! However, most of the energy comes from sugar, which the body can burn very quickly.
4. Renewable energy means energy which will not run out! Examples are Solar Power, Wind Power and Hydro-Power. These types of energy never run out and do not pollute the environment!
5. Non-Renewable energy will run out. It cannot be renewed. Examples are: coal, oil, gas, peat, diesel, petrol etc. These fossil fuels must be BURNED to get the energy out of them. This pollutes the air.
6. A Green way of drying your clothes is using wind-power and solar-power. How?! Hang them on the washing line outside! The sun and wind will dry them-for free!
7. One person CAN make a difference.
8. Travelling by Bus is more energy efficient than travelling by car-why? Because a bus holds LOTS of people, so they are not using cars, which would use alot more petrol!

Here are some pictures of 5th Class making bar-charts which show how much electricity the school has been using over the course of 4 weeks!

Making History: MDG’s Mighty Maths Committee

Exciting times! M.D.G has just produced its first Maths magazine called Maths Buster. Ms Lane and her Maths Committee have done an out-standing job in producing our very first issue. We hope to have a monthly magazine with maths puzzles for all. Maths is a very important part of our school curriculum and parents can be of great help to their children by involving them in very simple everyday Maths activities.

MDG Has Talent 2010

Once again our very own MDG X Factor proved a major success. Well done to all the children who participated. This year we saw a great variety of acts. Thank you to Mr. Drew and Mr. Kearney for organising it so well and to Ms. Nolan for her guest appearance as Danni Minogue!!

The Beetroot Project

One sunny day in September first class went out to our school garden. We were going to harvest the beetroot. All the children stood around the beetroot bed. We took turns to pull up the beetroot. It was easy to pull it up. We held on to the stalks and just . . . . . . . PULLED !

We put it in a bag and took it into our classroom. We examined the beetroot and noticed that it had green curly leaves, purple stalks and a purple ‘beetroot’ ! We drew ‘still life’ drawings using oil pastels.

We looked at a video – ‘How to cook beetroot’. Then teacher cooked the beetroot. We all tasted the beetroot when it was cooked. Colin and Marysia, from Poland, nearly ate it all !!!

There was a lot of beetroot juice. We painted patterns on kitchen roll with the juice.

Teacher found a recipe for ‘Beetroot and Chocolate Cake’ ! We all made up recipes in our ‘Free Writing’ copies.

Then teacher baked ‘Beetroot and Chocolate cake’ for us all !

It was . . . . . . . . . . . YUMMY !!!
